"Never Forget"

9/11 was one of the worst days in the history of our country. Every year I like to do something to remember that day and the millions of people affected by it. This year I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the play “9/11- A Day in the Life of a People.” The play was held in the Theatre Building and ran by one of the theatre classes here. It was a very interesting play as it took the audience into the lives’ of people directly affected by the attacks on the World Trade Center. A firefighter, nurse and stock exchange broker were a few of the people portrayed. These three stood out to me because their acts were very powerful and you felt as if they were the actual people who went through the experience they were sharing. The firefighter talked about how he had to carry equipment up the stairs of the Twin Towers because that was the only way up. What stuck out about his part was he said people kept telling him “Don’t go up there” and he responded with “That’s our job” and kept on going up. It truly made me realize how brave and courageous those firefighters were that day. Another act that stood out to me was the nurse. She was very confused on why we were being attacked just like everyone else that day. “What did we do? Why are they attacking us?”, she kept saying. You could really feel her confusion as well as her passion for wanting to help which is why she stood out to me. The stock exchange broker also stood out to me because every single one of her friends died that day. You could see how devastating that day was for her by just looking at her tears. They said it all.

9/11 was hard for me but seeing the lives’ of people who were directly affected by the attacks being portrayed right in front of me made me realize I was very lucky that day. I couldn’t imagine losing a loved one to those attacks. I was only in 1^st grade at the time so I couldn’t really grasp how devastating that day was until I got older. Now that I am 18 years old, I realize it is important to never forget that day and always remember the people who died and the people who fought for us. Something else I found interesting from the play was that through all the confusion people were still helping each other.  Everyone could have easily been self-centered and focused on themselves but they didn’t and thought about others in need. Overall, it was a great play and I will definitely go if it’s here again next year. 

Maybach Music Group Concert

Rick Ross. Meek Mill. Wale. Three of the biggest names in the music industry all performing at one concert. When I first heard of them coming, words can’t describe how excited I was. The concert was on November 4^th and I really wanted to go but I also knew tickets would be hard to come by. I wasn’t able to go get tickets the first day they went on sale and figured I wasn’t going to be able to go just like I couldn’t go to the Wiz Khalifa concert. Well it turned out tickets didn’t sell out the first day and my friends and I ended up getting some. They were very good seats too meaning we were going to be on the floor for my very first concert ever!

When Novemeber 4^th got here, I absolutely could not wait. All day we blasted all of their big hits like Im a Boss, Ambition and All I Do Is Win to get pumped up. We got to the concert fairly early because we wanted to get in in plenty of time to see the opening act, Machine Gun Kelly. Machine Gun Kelly was very good and got the crowd going for the three men that the Bryce Jordan was packed and ready to go wild for. They all came out separately and sang some of their songs. However the best part of the night, was when all three of them came out together. Everyone went absolutely nuts and started chanting “MMG! MMG! MMG!” They got right into it and started rocking the whole Bryce Jordan Center. It was by far the best performance of the night because they sang All I Do Is Win. It seemed like the BJC was about to explode from everyone jumping up and down and raising their hands in the air. Everyone in attendance were raising their hands in the air and singing to the song at the same time; it was one of the coolest things I’ve ever been a part of and I’ll never forget it.

Before coming to this concert I had heard that concerts weren’t that good because the music doesn’t sound that great live. I agree but the atmosphere was so incredible that I would go to another concert in a heartbeat. It’s so cool being around thousands of other people who share the same passion for music as you do. And the fact that mostly everyone there went to Penn State was amazing. Overall, it was an amazing concert and I would definitely go see them again.

Self Evaluation

1. My first semester at Penn State has been a good one. I have definitely learned a lot about myself and met some great people so far. I can’t believe it is almost over though! Time is flying by and I need to take advantage of every day I have here because before you know it we will all be graduating and heading off to the real world. English 15S has definitely been a positive experience for me. It has given me a lot more confidence in my writing and I have learned so much about the arts.  Originally, I didn’t know this class was going to focus on the arts and when I found out, I was pretty disappointed. I was not a big fan of the arts before coming here, but this class definitely made me appreciate them more. Whether it was going to tour the Palmer Museum of Art, the Arboretum, or to see the play “In the Red and Brown Water” I gained an appreciation for the arts. This class helped me think of the arts in different ways and really elevated my level of thinking. Although the arts still aren’t my favorite thing, I’m glad I came into this class with an open mind because it worked in helping me change my opinion towards art. In high school I wasn’t very open minded to trying new things and I hope that this new mindset of mine will help me keep getting involved and trying new things at Penn State.  I also learned a lot about ethos, pathos, logos. Knowing about the rhetorical triangle really helped me take my writing to the next level because I realized that everything you say is going to impact your audience in some way so it’s important to know what you want your audience to get out of your paper.
Besides learning a lot about myself, I learned a lot about Penn State during my first semester. I realized it is extremely important to get involved which I plan on doing more of next semester. I realized everyone is extremely friendly here and it seems like one big family. In high school people aren’t as outgoing and stick to their group of friends but at Penn State everyone is really nice. My classes and teachers have all been really good so far whether I’m sitting in a lecture hall with 400 people or sitting in a small classroom with just 20 people. I know we’re a Top 50 university and it has definitely lived up to the hype so far. One thing I still need to get used to though is the weather! I’m not used to the cold nor the rain. It seems like it rains a few times every week. Overall, I think I have adjusted to college life pretty well and I'm looking forward to spending the next few years of my life here!
